Paolo Stern, president of Nexumstp, the business consultancy company that assists over ten thousand SMEs across Italy, spoke today at the Sustainable Development Festival, discussing how the ecological transition is also giving new impetus to welfare plans. Mobility managers are becoming increasingly central figures in companies that promote sustainable mobility schemes for their staff.

Corporate welfare is increasingly being used to leverage the environmental sustainability of companies and to contribute to the well-being of workers and the community. This was the premise underlying the speech by Paolo Stern, employment consultant and president of Nexumstp, at “The new frontiers of corporate welfare”, a meeting held during the Sustainable Development Festival co-organised by M74solution, Studio Claudio Cavaliere and Studio De Feo-Vulpis.

“Among today’s most interesting and topical welfare schemes are those related to sustainable mobility. The aim is to reduce the use of personal cars in order to promote useful alternatives for relieving traffic congestion in urban areas, thereby also reducing pollution,” said Stern. In Milan, almost 50% of journeys are made by private car. In Palermo, that figure rises to 78%. However, if we look at other European cities, it is much lower: in London only one in three people uses their own vehicle, while in Paris the figure is less than one in six. (Source: ASSTRA data)

In light of these figures, the Ministry for Ecological Transition has given the figure of the mobility manager a central role in the country’s recent recovery plan. “The new recovery plan launched mid-pandemic highlighted the central importance for businesses of sustainable mobility management, mobility managers and the government’s work mobility plan (known in Italian as the PSCL). This aspect will continue to receive greater recognition in company welfare plans. Also, by its nature, it is free of extra costs for companies and does not mean higher taxes for employees,” said Stern. The new rules are aimed at all companies and public authorities with local offices staffed by more than 100 employees (previously the threshold was 300 employees) located in regional capitals, metropolitan cities, provincial capitals, or municipalities with a population of more than 50,000.

In order to address this transition” concluded Stern, “consultancy firms with experience in welfare, such as Nexumstp, can assist companies by offering integrated support that is not limited to regulatory compliance but which actually studies the real needs of businesses, to promote their growth and development. The main services that companies can delegate are the outsourced appointment of the company mobility manager, the drafting of the PSCL, and the implementation of a plan of action after careful analysis of the company’s structure and make-up.”
